You've hit the nail on the head: yes, the pillion seat is perfect for young boys (well, my college-age boy still fit, they're actually young men) & "ladies of small thinness". Unless, of course, that's a double-negative and you mean chubby ladies without much thinness... they might not fit.
I'm 5'10", 200-lbs and my Savage fits me fine. Then again, I loved the Suzuki 125 I took the MSF course on...
